Teachers Need This Routine

A morning routine for your school day

I BELIEVE THAT THE #1 THING WE ALL NEED FOR LESS STRESS IS MORE HABITS.

More times when we don’t have to think about every little action we are taking to

move the needle forward and can rely on our routine and discipline, rather than motivation. More daily actions that can allow us more focus, energy, and a positive attitude. WITHOUT making it feel like it’s just another thing on our to-do list.

One important thing for me as a teacher has always been to win the morning.

When I arrive at school,

I do these things:

  • Put everything I brought in away in its place

  • Do a 2-minute meditation from headspace

  • Write down the following on a sticky note

  • 3 Things I Need to Get Done that Day (The “Big 3”)

  • 3 Students that I Really Want to Connect With (I had 150 a day)

  • 3 Words That Embody How I Want to Show Up That Day

  • Plan my day

  • Put on a pump-up playlist and dance around the classroom while I get any materials ready that I need to

  • & Definitely drink some coffee

You don't have to follow my plan.

But, especially when you have SOME TIME TO THINK, you should come up with one! Whether you are intentional about it or not, you do have routines - they might just not be ones that are serving you.

Find what works for you and stick to it.

My routine takes me about 30 minutes before school starts to set up for the day, but even if it looks more like 5 for you, you can set yourself up for a good mindset for the day.

REMEMBER:

Consistency compounds.

There’s a book called Eat the Frog, which is based on the premise that you should try to do the HARD thing first, so then everything else in your day comes easier. Try to do things you don’t enjoy doing as much FIRST when you’re completing to-do’s, so then your energy is higher, and then YOU CAN GET IT DONE (for me that thing is grading and phone calls).

EVERY DAY IS A GREAT DAY TO BE INTENTIONAL!
